The gold bead head provides additional weight to the fly; this really helps you get down to the fish when its near the river bed. The bead is positioned at the front end of the fly and it dives down to the bottom when you pause when retrieving line. Fish using cast an retrieve method, -i.e.cast, pause,cast,pause etc..
